Mustang Heavyweight Track Drill
The High
Performance Heavyweight...Mustang Track Drill

Whether you drill rock to crush it, move it,
or
remove it, when you decide to select new drilling equipment there are
really just two capabilities that interest you: high production
capacity and availability. Whatever other qualities you expect in
a track drill, these capabilities are indispensable. Your
drilling equipment must have the ability to consistently put down hole
at a rate that will keep you ahead of the competition. And your
equipment must be able to stay on the job and work efficiently with
minimum care. That's why, ever since its introduction in the
mid-1960's, one heavyweight track drill has consistently offered
availability and performance that surpasses all others in hole
production in construction, quarrying, and open pit mining. That
drill is the Mustang drill, the original Joy heavyweight track drill.
Today's Mustang track drill is still the same high
performance heavyweight you've come to know over the years and
more. We're sure that when you compare, you'll decide there's no
comparison to the Mustang track drill, the leader in its field.
Mustang Track Drill...
The Heavyweight That Moves and Sets
Up Like a Mediumweight
Firm Tripod Mounting
One of the important and widely copied design
concepts of the Mustang track drill allows the tower lift cylinders to
form the legs of a tripod to create a firm drilling platform. The
widely spaced cylinder pivot points are main frame mounted for maximum
rigidity. The exclusive Joy tripod mounting utilizes a
hydraulically operated 5 foot feed extension to sting the tower to the
ground, causing machine weight to transfer to the rear drive sprockets
for solid three-point ground contact. The tower lift cylinders -
which are an extension of the tripod - are independently extendable and
provide lateral adjustment to compensate for pitching ground, thus
keeping the tower in vertical alignment. The unique tripod
mounting concept eliminates the need for leveling jacks still used on
some heavyweight rigs.
Efficient Chain Feed
The chain feed assembly built as part of the tower
operates through a heavyduty, 1-1/2 pitch, high fatigue roller chain
powered by a 20 horsepower, high torque Pistonair motor driving a
positive-acting worm gear transmission. The fully enclosed,
grease lubricated transmission provides variable, constant feed rate
for sustained penetration and 9100 pounds chain pull for quick
retraction of multiple lengths of drill steel. A simple single
bolt chain adjuster is provided for tightening the feed chain.
Compact Tower Construction...For Stability
and Strength
The heavyweight Mustang track drill is designed and
built to move easily over rough terrain and set up quickly for
drilling. This heavyweight has the ability, agility, and power to
tram, maneuver, and set up quickly for deep hole, high production
drilling in difficult and seemingly inaccessible locations. Much
of its ability comes from a heavyweight chassis designed to perform
like a mediumweight.
Durable
Track and Chassis Components
Heavy Duty Chassis Construction
Crawler side frames have 10 inch wide crawler pads
that provide over 2100 square inches of solid ground contact for
outstanding traction and sure-footedness in rough terrain. Added
balance and stability comes from a 9-foot wide stance and low profile,
low center of gravit main frame. Furthermore, the chassis is all
working weight - no counterweights are required. The hefty
ground-hugging chassis provides a stable platform for vertical or
inclined drilling in uphill, downhill, or sidehill positions.
Durable Track Construction

Track frames are built to withstand hard usage and
provide firm footing and stability needed for deep hole drilling.
Heavy steel plate rockguards are standard, extending the full length of
the side frame to provide strength and rigidity and to prevent rocks
from jamming the tracks. Eight bottom idler rollers and one
midpoint roller located topside give sure footing to each track and
distribute the load evenly. Hardened track rollers, heat treated
roller shafts and idlers are of solid alloy steel construction, with
field replaceable bronze bearings. Thrust washers have grease
seals to retain lubricant and keep out dirt and mud. Rear drive
sprockets and front idlers are heavy, solid cast steel construction for
strength and added working weight. Drive sprocket pillow blocks
are reinforced cast steel and use bolt-on construction for convenient
disassembly if necessary.
Track Adjustment

A unique track take-up device consisting of a single
acting cylinder and compression spring is built into each side
frame. The cylinder is grease pressurized to compress the spring
and keep the tracks tight to help prevent tracks from jumping sprockets
even in the toughest operating conditions. A grease gun is all
that is needed to keep tracks properly tensioned, encouraging drillers
to make the simple adjustment when needed. (Compare this to
mechanical devices that require tools and frequent adjustment.) A
cover over the grease fitting precludes accidental pressurizing by
lubrication crews.
Independent Track Oscillation
An equalizer bar attatched transversely between the
side frames allows the tracks to adjust independently to uneven
terrain. The oscillation device is purely mechanical. There
are no hydraulic hoses or connections to leak or break, no cylinder
packings to replace, no trapped air to bleed. No adjustments are
ever required and maintenance consists only of an occasional greasing.
Dependable Tramming Power, Safe
Breaks
A pair of powerufl 14 horsepower, independently
controlled Pistonair air motors provides tractor-type steering and
tramming. The Joy-built high torque, radial air motors deliver
more than ample power for moving quickly from hole to hole, climbing
steep sidehills, or towing a big portable compressor. Oversized
spring-loaded, air-released, band-type brakes stop the track drill
automatically whenever the tram controls are released.
Transmission gearing can easily be declutched for towing by means of a
convenient hand lever mounted on top of each transmission.
And, unling some track drills with external brakes
and exposed drive chains that are vulnerable to damage from weather and
construction debris, brakes and transmission gearing on Mustang drills
are oil sump lubricated and totally enclosed within an oil-tight case,
to protect against rock dust and weather.
Centralizer
A massive, ruggedly built cast steel centralizer
locks and hold the drill steel securely while collaring the hole.
The centralizer has an additional function as part of the Steel
Wrenching System: slotted centralizer bushings to engage the flatted
couplings to hold the steels while uncoupling. When pulling
steels, horizontally hinged centralizer arms automatically open and
close around the drill steel as a the couplings pass through the
centralizer.
Functional
Controls for Safe, Efficient Operation
Drilling Controls
Operating controls for the drill hammer, chain feed,
and steel handling system are conveniently mounted on the left side of
the tower, arranged in a logical manner for systematic one-man
operation and close-in observation of drilling. An automatic feed
pressure regulator is adjustable to maintain optimum penetration
according to the formation being drilled; a unique device that provides
a tolerance without sacrificing drilling performance.
Rotation
The rotation control valve includes a metered, slow
rotation position for drilling in addition to a fast rotation position
for overburden drilling and retracting. Rotation speed (rpm) can
be fixed for repeatable, consistent hole-to-hole performance or it can
easily be reset to accommodate changing drilling conditions. A
feathered reverse rotation function provides for easy uncoupling of
steels.
Feed
The feed control valve includes a regulated forward
feed position for drilling in addition to a fast speed function for
hole cleaning and steel handling. Feed control valve settings are
adjustable and repeatable. This assures optimum hole-to-hole
performance. The feed valve can readily be reset when drilling
conditions change. A feathered fast retract contols affords easy
uncoupling and fast steel handling.
It is important to note that feed and rotation
control valves are each designed with four positive stops for precise
control in neutral, controlled forward, full forward, and full reverse.
Tramming and Tower Controls

Controls for tramming and tower positioning are
located on a single pedestal side-mounted over the tracks and
function-oriented for easy operation. Tram controls for
tractor-type maneuvering overhang the tracks so the operator can avoid
walking close to the crawlers. All controls are spring-loaded
"off" for safety and tram controls fold down to prevent accidental
operation. Individual control levers operate each tower lift
cylinder independently for raising and lowering of the tower from 12°
above horizontal to 15° ahead of vertical plus lateral movement 10°
each side of vertical to compensate for terrain variations. A
third control lever operates the 5 foot feed extension cylinder to
sting the tower to the ground and provide tripod stability for drilling.
Effective Hydraulic and Lubricating Systems
Simple, Effective Hydraulic System
The Mustang track drill uses a simple closed circuit
hydraulic system that opeartes only when hydraulic power is
needed. No air pressure is wasted on running an idle
system. A pressure-regulated, vane-type air motor powers a high
capacity pump to supply hydraulic pressure as required for operating
the tower lift cylinders, feed extension cylinder, and the cylinders
that operate the steel handling system. The hydraulic system
requires practically no attention other than occasional checking of the
oil level in the reservoir, which is integral with the chassis main
frame.
Hydraulic Safety
All hydraulic cylinders are double-acting and
self-locking when not in operation. Additional protection is
provided by pilot check valves that prevent cylinder movement, except
when intended or in the event of line breakage. A pressure
regulating valve limits pump motor air pressure for optimum system
hydraulic pressure.
Exclusive Pressurized Air-Oil Lubrication
System
Positive air stream lubrication of the drill engine,
all air valves and air motors is accomplished with a unique lubricator
fitting integral with the main air inlet. The lubricator, or
injection oiler, directs a pressurized and filtered air-oil mixture to
operating components.
Oil flow is adjustable for effective, positive
lubrication without wasting oil. Oil is consumed only when
components of the system are operating. The drill engine oil
reservoir is built into the chassis main frame. This compact,
integral design eliminates add-on tanks found on some track drills and
contributes to the overall clean lines of the Mustang track drill.
Lubricator Fitting
The self-cleaning lubricator fitting keeps dirt out
of the system to insure against machine breakdown. As shown in
the illustration, inlet air passes through a fine wire mesh screen so
that clean air only is delivered to operating components. When
blow air to the drill is used, air rushes through the core of the
strainer and any accumulation of dirt, pipe scale or flakes for hose
lining is immediately blown out via the drill air tube. An
optional shut off valve is available close coupled to the lubricator
fitting.
