Engineered for Endurance
Joy Ram at Work
     Operating economy and dependability demand endurance on the job, month after month.  In a track drill, endurance comes from strong, well-designed components that add extra weight and strength for tough day-after-day working conditions.  Ram is one of the heaviest track drills in its class, and it's all working weight.  Low profile construction, longer and wider tracks, and extra weight give Ram excellent stability and balance, in tramming and settling up.  The Ram chassis provides a rock-steady drilling platform for increased hole production, economy of operation, and total availability.
    Ram is built for tough, punishing work and has the stamina to withstand extremes of climate and 'round-the-clock operation.  Chassis components are better protected against damage than on any other rig.  Air, hydraulic, and lubrication systems are designed for severe service, with practically no maintenance.

Low Profile Design for Stability and Balance

    Extra weight and low profile construction work together to give Ram ground-hugging capabilities not found in comparable rigs.  Its low center of gravity and wide-track stance provide superior stability and balance in all tramming and drilling attitudes.  Side-hill,Ram Highperformance Track Drill Illustration rocky-rough terrain is easily negotiated by Ram with its 10" wide crawler pads and nearly 1500 square inches of ground contact.  For symmetry and better balance, the boom pedestal is located near the center line of the chassis and the pivor point of the main boom arm is midpoint between the tracks.  In addition to providing better balance, this design improves the range of over-track drilling positions on both sides of the machine for reaching hard-to-get holes in tight palces.

    Ram utilizies a unique mechanical oscillation device mounted to each side frame which allows the tracks to adjust independently to uneven terrain.  Because it is purely mechanical, no adjustments are ever required and maintenance consists only of occasional greasing.  Total oscillation of 1
5° between tracks compensates easily for boulders and outcroppings when tramming over rough terrain.  Independent track oscillation provides solid ground contact when setting up to drill in any terrain.

High Performance Tramming Motors

    Ram is equipped with two independently operated 11-1/2 hp Pistonair tramming motors - almost double the tramming power of most other drills.  These heavy-duty, high torque air motors provide more than ample power for towing a big portable compressor, climbing steep side hills, and for quick and easy moves between drill holes.  Oversized spring-loaded, air-released automatic brakes are standard equipment for operating safety.  The brakes will hold Ram in any position it can negotiate under its own power.  Brakes and transmission gearing are enclosed in an oil tight case, fully protected against rock dust and weather.

    Track side frames are built to withstand the extremes of hard usage for the life of the machine.  Heavy steel plate rock guards extened the full length of the crawler frame to provide strength and rigidity and are well shrouded to prevent rocks from jamming the tracks.  Five bottom idler rollers give solid support to each track and distribute the load evenly.  Ten inch wide crawler pads and forged steel tread links assure firm footing for vertical or inclined drilling in uphill, downhill or sidehill positions.  Sprockets are solid steel construction for strength and added weight.  Even the drive sprocket pillow block is of reinforced steel construction and uses bolt-on mounting for easy field replacement, if ever necessary.

Track AdjustmentReinforced Boom

    A unique track take-up device consisting of a grease operated single acting cylinder and coil spring is built into each side frame.  Adding grease pressurizes
the cylinder, compresses the spring, and keeps the tracks tight.  Vent releases excess pressure and cover prevents tampering, or overgreasing.

    The main boom arm is constructed from reinforced square steel tubing which is much stronger than conventional round tubular steel.  Box-like construction improves boom rigidity, even helps to maintain steel alignment, and provides a rock steady platform for drilling.

Full Range Power Feed DumpPower Feed Dump

    There is never any delay in changing from vertical holes to horizontal or angle holes with Ram.. Full range, hydraulically operated power feed dump positions the drill through a continuous 170° arc, from reverse angle drilling positions, through vertical and horizontal, all the way to 30
° up-hole drilling positions.
    The convenience of hydraulic power is employed for all other boom and feed positioning.  Optimum size double acting cylinders operate boom and feed swing, feed tilt and swing, and feed extension.

Heavy-Duty Chain Feed
   

    Ram feed is fabricated with heavy 6" channel guides welded into a box section for maximum rigidity and positiveHeavy Duty Chain Feed steel alignment in all drilling positions.  The feed will accomodate 12 foot steel changes.  A 1-1/4" pitch heavy-duty feed roller chain is powered by a high torque Pistonair motor driving a positive-acting, self-braking worm gear transmission that produces more than 2,000 lbs. chain pull for retracting steels.  A simple, single-bolt chain adjuster is provided for tightening the feed cain.

     Cast steel centralizer arms with bushings are spring-loaded open, held closed by simple "belt buckle" latch.

Drill ControlsBoom and Tram Controls

    The drill and feed control valve assembly is mounted on the feed for convenient close-in operation of the drill.  Control levers operate forward and reverse rotation, drill hammer, drill blow, feed advance and retraction.  The valve assembly is designed for use with Joy VCR-260, VCR-261, and 500-RR drills.

Boom and Tram Controls

    Operating safety is a big consideration in Ram design and contruction: 
Function-oriented, side-mounted boom andHydraulic System tram controls are grouped together for easy operation from a single control console.  Tram controls overhang the track so the operator can avoid walking close to the crawlers.  Boom and feed controls are arranged for fingertip operation and all controls are spring-loaded "off" for safety.  Tram levers fold down to prevent accidental operation.

Simple, Efficient Hydraulic System

    Ram uses an efficient closed circuit hydraulic system that operates only when hydraulic power is required.  No air pressure is wasted running an idle system.  A vane-type air motor drives a high capacity vane-type pump which supplies oil under pressure only as needed to operate boom and feed positioning cylinders.
    Operating safety is inherent in hte hydraulic system: double acting cylinders are hydraulically locked in position when controls are off and fail-safe protection is provided by check valves that prevent cylinders from collapsing in the event of line breakage.  In addition, the system is adequately protected by relief valves that guard against damage from excessive hydraulic pressures.

    Air stream lubrication of all operating valves, air motors, and the drill engine is accomplished by a unique lubricator fitting located in the main air inlet. The lubricator directs a pressurized, filtered air-oil mixture to operating components.  Oil flow is adjustable and oil is consumed only when components of the system are operating.

    The self-cleaning lubricator fitting keeps dirt out of the system and thus insures against machine breakdown.  As
Lubricator Fitting shown in the illustration, all air passes through a fine wire mesh screen so that clean air only is delivered to operating components.  When blow air to the drill is used, air rushes through the core of the strainer and any accumulation of dirt, pip scale or flakes of hose lining is immediately blown out via the drill blast tube.
